The future of metropolises is based on their capacity to be resilient to resist the challenges the world will experience in the next decades. Climate change, migrations, electric mobility transition… Cities must be prepared for what has to come and search for solutions and opportunities that will let them overcome these problems.

Climate change is one of the main drivers that is accelerating transformations in metropolitan spaces. Migrations due to ecological disasters in vulnerable regions are attracting people to cities where there are more opportunities to live, but this also grows problems that already exist in urban areas, like pollution, access to housing or scarcity of water.

Claiming social cohesion in growing multicultural societies, health problems derived from contamination, mobility between regions or droughts and floods due to weather changes are not only responsibilities of metropolises, so they must determine, according to their interests and limitations, how they can address them and who they have to work with, if regional actors, boundary municipalities, or both.

Collaboration between cities with similar challenges, monitoring the possible problems and financing reliable arrangements are some of the key elements that metropolises have to take a look into to endure the next years, solutions that the network 100 Resilient Cities describe in the third publication from the Issue Paper series.
