Sustainability
Not only did the pandemic have an immense health, social, and economic impact on the lives of citizens in metropolitan areas, but also an ecological impact. The dual climate and biodiversity crisis we face are a great opportunity to connect communities and build them back better from the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are five aspects this publication considers in the conservation of biodiversity: Urban Nature, Human Health and Well-Being, Climate Change and Urban Resilience, Food Security and Diverse Urban Forms. Each theme explores the possibilities it brings to ecosystem conservation in cities.

Ariana Dickey, Cathy Oke, Judy Bush and Amy Hahs examine the impacts and development of nature in metropolitan contexts in this publication, ‘Nature in and across cities: metropolitan approaches for biodiversity’. The synthesis of their work reveals that the cooperation across different metropolitan areas is necessary to give an adequate response to the climate crisis, but it also reveals that local and regional governments by themselves can make an impact in the lives of their citizens.
