The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has defined a path that the United Nations is using to schedule and monitor the actions to build a sustainable and secure future for everyone. Cooperation with and between metropolises is mandatory to try and accomplish the 169 targets of the SDG, because several of the objectives are deeply connected to how cities will develop in the next few years.
Governance between every level of the administration, future planning of the urban landscape, sustainable public and private transport and climate change resilience are the four key points defined in the New Urban Agenda. This is just an example of various agendas and accords that countries and cities alike are agreeing with to work together for a better future.
Cities must identify and prioritise those actions that can work better in their regions, especially the ones that are more related to the SDG that focus on cities. To prevent corruption and legitimise changes, governments must implicate local stakeholders and make a clear accountability so citizens can understand and work with them.
In the second publication of the Issue Papers, Agustí Fernández de Losada explains that cities must approach the SDG always according to their capabilities, with the idea that these are not just recommendations but global problems that are pressuring our lives and need to be solved in the upcoming decades, centred in the metropolitan landscape.
