Montréal, June 2, 2017

The Honorable Denis Coderre, Mayor of Montréal and President of Metropolis, World Association of Major Metropolises which has 140 members, expresses himself about the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement:

"The Paris Agreement, a historic diplomatic success, expresses an unprecedented willingness of the international community to put the world on the path to a more sustainable development.

Cities have played a crucial role in the success of the Paris Conference, affirming the determination of municipal and regional authorities to act together to fight climate change. The declaration of the President of the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement breeds consternation in the major cities of the world.

In spite of this setback, though, cities shall not give up, and are conscious of fully taking their responsibilities.

Mayors from around the world are meeting in Montréal from June 19 to 22, in the framework of the XII Metropolis World Congress. Climate change will be at the heart of our deliberations, under the theme “Global Challenges: Major Cities in Action” and with the collaboration of other networks of cities, such as the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and ICLEI.

Cities will remain at the forefront of the fight against climate change, and will continue to ensure constant leadership to maintain the impetus given by the Paris Agreement."
