Metropolis members at the Urban 20 Summit
Twelve Metropolis members (Beijing, Berlin, City of Buenos Aires, Durban, Jakarta, Johannesburg, Madrid, Mexico City, Montreal, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Seoul) joined other cities of the G20 countries at the Urban 20 Summit that took place in Buenos Aires last October 29 and 30. Metropolis has been associated to this initiative as a knowledge partner.
In the words of Fernando Straface, the Argentinian Secretary General of International Relations this summit convened by UCLG and C40 “is the bridge between cities and the G20, between mayors and national leaders”. The main topics discussed amongst the participating local leaders were: environment, social cohesion, financing infrastructures and gender equality.
A series of recommendations were gathered in a final communiqué signed by: Beijing, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Durban, Hamburg, Houston, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, Milan, Montreal, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, and Tshwane. This document highlights the commitment of mayors to constructively contribute to G20 discussions and willingness to support the agreement of national governments in achieving integration and inclusion, ensuring decent work and stepping up climate ambitions.
The President of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, received the representatives of the delegations and committed to deliver the messages of the final communiqué to the G20 members during the Meeting by the end of November in Buenos Aires. Next Urban 20 will take place in Tokyo between May 20 and 22, 2019.
