World Association of the Major Metropolises
The Urban Innovation Community was established in June 2014 at the United Cities and Local Governments Executive Bureau meeting in Liverpool, England. The aim of the Community is to promote innovation and further enhance the learning agenda of UCLG.
Urban innovation includes combatting the social, economic, environmental and governance challenges facing cities today; all with the intention of improving the quality of life for a cities’ citizens.
UCLG, in conjunction with Metropolis and the City of Guangzhou, host the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation biennially.
The Urban Innovation Community enhances the success of the Guangzhou Award by ensuring the continuity of the successful initiatives of the Award’s finalists. It also serves to increase international exchanges and cooperation in urban innovation; facilitate relevant research and development, provide suggestions for policy and decision-making and ensure the future work of UCLG.

A partnership between UCLG, Metropolis and the Guangzhou Municipal Government, the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation aims to recognize innovation in improving social, economic and environmental sustainability in cities and regions and, in so doing, to advance the prosperity and life quality of their citizens. The Award is presented biennially and encourages innovation in public policy, projects, business models and practices.
The 3rd Guangzhou Award is receiving applications and is encouraging entries from those cities that are improving infrastructure and public services, and putting into place participatory planning and good governance, partnerships, technology, resilience, social inclusion and gender equality.
5 winning cities will receive a USD 20,000 cash prize, a trophy and a commemorative certificate designed for the award. The winners of the Guangzhou Award are also invited to attend special events including the Guangzhou International Conference on Urban Innovation, an exhibition and the award ceremony. Besides the five awards, the Organising Committee of the Guangzhou Award also intends to recognise one of the short-listed initiatives for its popularity with the public.

The Guangzhou Institute for Urban Innovation was established in 2012 under the framework of the Guangzhou Award.
The Institute’s mission is to forge a first class international think tank on urban innovation. The Institute is a network of experts and organisations dedicated to furthering innovation concepts, tools and methodologies offering intellectual support for global urban innovation.
The think tank benefits from the invaluable input of research and academic institutions, professional associations, community-based organisations, industry leaders and individual experts.
The Institute also acts as a capacity building and dialogue platform for opening up a “green channel” of international exchanges.
