Despite the advances made in gender equality in international, national and local fields, there are still a lot of objectives to accomplish. The sexual division of labour created a situation of discrimination where women are relegated to care tasks, and in metropolitan areas, to work mostly in the service sector and displaced to live in peripheral communities.
As women strengthen their voices to demand their needs and rights, cities are making advances in implementing gender perspective in their projects. Urban spaces are being rethought and rebuilt according to these demands, where reproductive labour is taken into consideration so women in vulnerable situations can safely travel, work and live.
Political participation from any gender is necessary to achieve equality in metropolises, so creating spaces and resources where women gather in a secure environment and develop a particular own agenda will empower them. Also, increasing women's representation could make an impact on the visibility of their requests towards society at a political level.
In the Issue Papers 4, Ana Falú acknowledges how in some cities advancements towards women’s rights were made and details practical recommendations to follow so the most urgent problems are addressed, like sexual harassment or the poor access to public services for families.
