World Association of the Major Metropolises
This programme entails a structural approach to tackling poverty and improving inhabitants’ quality of life through strategic care of the demands of neighbourhoods and communities, taking residents’ contributions into account.
The True Neighbourhoods and Communities Programme constitutes a tool for participation, which was created in 2005. Its aim is to attend to the 300 neighbourhoods that have the highest poverty rates, and to the 53 rural communities in the La Paz Municipality. Thus far, interventions have been carried out in 69 neighbourhoods and 4 communities to physically transform them. Streets, avenues, new housing, children’s centres, nurseries, playing fields, children’s playgrounds, promenades, squares, water distribution systems, electricity services, etc., have been provided. There are plans to start activities in a further 51 neighbourhoods and 4 communities, thus bringing the benefits to a total of 136 neighbourhoods and 10 communities. There are an outstanding 164 neighbourhoods and 43 communities where activities have yet to start in order to meet the goal of improving the quality of life of La Paz’s inhabitants.
