The socio-environmental recovery initiative for the Llobregat River has successfully turned the fluvial area into a safe and accessible place for citizens, fit for the practice of healthy pursuits and characterised by high landscape quality; an improved fluvial environment for social practices and whose biodiversity and capacity for resilience have been considerably enhanced.
The AMB (Metropolitan Area of Barcelona) has developed an urban strategy based on governance criteria and conceived technically using a multidisciplinary approach that has promoted the reclaiming of the fluvial area of the Llobregat River with the primary goals of safeguarding the resources, improving the environment and offering the highest standard of environmental services to the public, becoming a lynchpin amidst Catalonia’s green infrastructure. The outcomes may be deemed spectacular as regards urban planning, environmental and, above all, social aspects, revealed by the major social impact borne by the initiative and the large crowds visiting what used to be a marginal space. The environmental impact has also proven to be highly positive. The fluvial area of the Llobregat River has therefore evolved from a peri-urban marginal space to a cohesion-building space in the city, of tremendous environmental value, which plays host to 2.4 million visitors per year
