World Association of the Major Metropolises
Istanbul’s intercontinental Metrobüs bus rapid transit (BRT) line is an effective solution with low initial costs to high levels of traffic congestion in urban areas and constrained resources. MterobÜs BRT implementation is regarded as significant transport improvement with more immediate results.
The Istanbul BRT line carries a big number of riders and has dramatically reduced travel times. BRT provides a public transport alternative, which is faster and better quality compared to other models of transport and considered the traffic congestion. Istanbul BRT system is slightly different of the others in terms of commercial speed and density of passenger since it has the highest commercial speed in BRT system, which is 40 kilometer an hour. It is also the only intercontinental BRT system in the world and consists of four main parts. The BRT line composes of 52 kilometer with 45 stations. Around 850.000 passengers in a day use this route now save approximately 52 minutes a day. Public transport became a faster solution with its own dedicated line and no traffic lights. Another aim was to reduce the use of automobiles in order to decrease the traffic congestion and according to the studies carried out some 80.000 vehicles have been withdrawn from the traffic thanks to Metrobüs. The project goals are also to increase the efficiency of management and energy, and to decrease the emission of greenhouse gases at local level. These objectives towards environment and efficiency have been met to a great extent.
