This project aims to be a “second engine” that generates additional income for the family without leaving home and largely involve the surrounding community. It also aims to promote the creation of quality local products.
Many housewives in Surabaya are jobless, while in fact their family’s economic condition is still under the good standard of living. Surabaya City Government took an initiative to empower housewives by providing series of skills training in creating valuable product and assisting up to the marketing and product promotion. Economic Heroes Program is one of the women empowerment methods for helping family economic condition. Surabaya City Government gives training to women who are still in the productive age. The skill set tailored to the desires and capabilities of each, such as sewing, miscellaneous business, food, and handicrafts.
A target of 14.000 poor families of women will receive training each year. They belong to a group called Self-Help Groups (SHGs). Until 2013, there were 981 groups. Each group consisted of 20-25 people. These women can sell their products into the market and they may also be provided capital assistance. Besides the housewives this programs also aims for ex prostitutes. They train until they can running the business by themselves and minimize the probability for them to comeback in prostitution. Empowerment for independent women in economy is increasing their bargaining position in society. So, women will not becoming object for violence and exploitation. Besides, empowerment for housewives can make financial in home stronger and they still can manage their children without leaving home.
