World Association of the Major Metropolises
The Recycling Department has performed this project in the following sections: Residential areas; commercial areas; administrative areas, and educational areas.
Back in 1999, certain residential areas of Mashhad were examined to find out the possibility of Recycling. This people living in residential areas were given information about the project and its sanitary environmental and economic advantages. 30,000 families were given instructions directly. Gradually, the number of families increased. Currently, more than 250,000 families, from a total of 400,000 families residing in the areas under cover, are cooperating with the project. Furthermore, given the profitibility of the task, the private sector and service companies with educated personnel take care of the waste materials of 90,000 families, leaving the Department to only supervise.
The percentage of the recyclable materials is as follows: paper (45%); dry bread (26%); glass(20%); metals (5%); plastic (4%). To facilitate the job for the citizens from whose houses the recyclable materials cannot be collected, special countainers have been fitted. Also, as the waste paper of the educational and administrative centres of Mashhad is considerable, and is most suitable for recycling, 900 special boxes have been installed in 250 educational and administrative centres.
