World Association of the Major Metropolises
The key objective of the Metropolitan Municipal Waste Management Programme (PMGRM) is to provide the most rational, ecological and sustainable solution to the problem of municipal waste in a densely-populated area with around three million inhabitants and 33 townships generating an annual waste of approximately 1,500,000 tonnes. With investment of 279 million euros and a total budget of 751 million euros, the objective is to recycle 60% of waste by the year 2006.
The PMGRM's urban impact is characterised by three undertakings:
1. the construction of three metropolitan waste treatment centres
2. the establishment of "Ecoparks" - providing ecological, urban and socially viable solutions to the problem of waste generated in large cities, and
3. the installation of waste deposit and recycling centres, where the public can bring hazardous, toxic or large waste.
