The 2012 Metropolis Board of Directors Meeting will be a special event: Guangzhou will emerge as a capital of innovation, offering an ideal platform to explore and discuss the most innovative approaches to rethinking cities in the 21st-century.Jointly organized by the city of Guangzhou and Metropolis, the event will also include the ceremony for the first edition of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. This new award has sparked considerable interest to date and has already received 135 submissions from 80 cities around the world.

The Workshop City Protocol to promote a certification system for measuring the degree of efficiency and quality in cities was held on 16 and 17 July. The event brought together around 200 spokespersons and included the attendance of two Metropolis representatives who played an active role in the discussions to establish a new framework for city improvement and transformation.
Barcelona City Council is acting as the project sponsor, with the involvement of CISCO and GDF Suez and the collaboration of over 90 cities, organizations, universities, and businesses.

UN-Habitat jointly with the Italian hosts (Government of Italy, Campania Region and City of Naples) will celebrate the 6th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) on 1-7 September in Naples under the theme “The Urban Future”. Metropolis will be organizing an open networking event titled: “Metropolis at Work: Governance, Finance, and the Execution of Public Policies” on 4 September. In addition, the Metropolis Initiatives exhibition will showcase some of the world's leading cities and innovations in urban development.UCLG will also be participating and co-organizing several events at the WUF.
