The next Commission 1 “Cities and Climate Change” meeting will take place in Paris, on the 15th, 16th and 17th of December 2010.

Commission 1 is presided over by Ms Hélène Gassin, Vice-president for environment, agriculture and energy in the Ile-de-France regional council. For the 2009-2011 term, Commission 1 has proposed to focus on the following three areas: periurban open spaces; anticipating climate change and biodiversity.

The technical meeting that took place in June 2010 dealt with cities’ policies and strategies regarding open spaces (urban and periurban agriculture, water and biodiversity), as well as issues concerning food security in cities.

As regards climate change, the Commission currently proposes a training session entitled « Cities and Climate Change » which will take place in Paris, at the Montparnasse Tower on 15^thand 16^thDecember 2010. The session will tackle some of the different problems linked to human activities and climate change, such as the principal challenges concerning water resources, forests, agriculture, biodiversity, urban heat islands, city planning and transport. In addition, we will deal with changes in climate and the main risks posed by extreme meteorological phenomena: severe floods, heat waves, etc. Additionally, and on behalf of Mayor of Nanterre M.Patrick JARRY,  the training session will be followed by a technical on-site visit on ecological neighborhood in the City of Nanterre(4 km from Paris) on 17^th December.

We hope that a significant participation by the members of Commission 1, among other participants, in the workshop may make this the ideal occasion to share experiences and to learn from both French technicians and other experts from participating metropolises.
