Following on from conversations with the company Cisco to develop the Smart City concept, Barcelona has established the public/private basis to become a global reference model of sustainable urban development.
The city will create the BIT-Habitat Foundation, design the City Protocol, test-run new urban services, and enjoy the collaboration of private enterprises that will also bring their knowledge of human and material resources to the table. This has all created a favorable atmosphere for the creation of a Metropolis Initiative promoted by Barcelona City Council and Cisco.
Within the framework of the Metropolis 2009-2011 Action Plan, Commission 5 “Partnership for Urban Innovation” was established with the goal of fostering innovation in cities, in close collaboration with the private sector and other interested institutions.
This publication sets out some of the innovative technology and sustainability actions from Metropolis member cities, the Connected Urban Development partner cities and other progressive cities worldwide. These provide an insightful and inspiring benchmark of best practices towards Smart+Connected Communities. These signify the emergence of an urban services platform approach towards the role of technology in the sustainable development of cities.
