Following the proposal the Mayor of Guangzhou, Wan Qingliang, the city is launching the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (abbreviated as Guangzhou Award) jointly with Metropolis and UCLG. The Awards, which will be given during the next Metropolis Board of Directors, is an effort to improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and hence advance the livelihood of their citizens.

On 8 October last, the Metropolis Board of Directors approved the composition of the jury that is to assess the entries for the 4^th edition of the Metropolis Award; an edition that brings together a total of 43 projects from 27 cities, the highest number of entries of all the editions held to date. 

The jury of the current edition is made up of the cities of Berlin, as first prize winner in the previous edition; Cairo, as host city of the Congress; Abidjan, Montreal and São Paulo. Each of the jury members, appointed by their respective cities, has already been given all the projects in order to review and assess them according to the criteria set forth by the Award conditions. The jury will meet on 24 and 25 January in Paris to pool their assessments, to deliberate and to rate the finalist projects.

Metropolis and the city of Barcelona organized the 2010 Metropolis Board Meeting, which took place from 4 to 8 October 2010. The meeting assembled 84 cities, diverse institutions and over 250 participants from around the world and served as a discussion and reflection space on common questions shared by cities and metropolitan regions. Issues addressed during the event included urban innovation, governance and the development of metropolitan areas.

During two days and as a part of Metropolis Board of Directors meeting, the representatives of the regional antannaes of Metropolis Women International Network have met in order to discuss and share the actions that have been carried out by each of them as well as the Action Plan for the next two years. The session was open by Carme Figueres, councillor of the Consell Audiovisual de Catalunya (CAC) and representative of Barcelona’s antennae.
